RoSPA Safety Gate Advice Safety gates at the top and bottom of the stairs are recommended for children up to 24 months old; after that age the gates are no longer guaranteed by the manufacturers.
There are different types of safety gate: the one at the top of the stairs should be fixed to the wall (wall fixed gate), pressure-fitted ones are better for the bottom of the stairs or for isolating a room such as the kitchen while cooking is being done. Some safety gates allow adults to pass through by opening and closing the middle section after themselves so it would be better to leave the gate in a position where children (up to 2 years old) are freely moving around the house.

The Basics to Baby Proofing Your HomeWhen you return from the hospital with your new arrival, remember that your home is a dangerous place for babies. Follow this as a guide on how to make your home baby proof..
Do not underestimate anything - Remember you baby isn’t aware of dangers & hazards yet (and probably won’t be for a good few years!) Therefore you need to ensure that everything that is going to be in your baby’s environment for the first 12 months is safe.
Get on your hands and knees and crawl - See what your baby sees, crawl round the house on your hands and knees and make a note of anything that could be a potential danger or hazard. And remember, babies begin to become mobile at around 6 months.
Sharp corners - Yes will give an adult a nasty cut and headache. However to a baby, a blow to the head off a sharp corner can be fatal (babies brains are exposed as the skull bones don’t fuse together until their around 24 months old). Make sure you use corner cushions to soften the impact in the event of your baby banging their head; there are various brands and prices available.
Purchase Corner CushionsCupboards – Babies love to investigate, with this in mind, make sure all your cupboards that can be in reach are secured with locks and latches to prevent your baby gaining entry.
Purchase Cupboard LocksAppliances – Fridges, ovens and microwaves are very attractable to babies, ensure that any that are in reach are locked with an appliance lock to prevent any accidents happening, remember freezers tend to be on the floor and frozen food will have the same impact as a rock if it falls on your baby.
Purchase Appliance Locks
Safety Gates and Stair Gates – Don’t want your baby crawling into a room at all? Then it’s a good idea to install a baby gate within the door frame to prevent your little one from entering any unwanted rooms.
Purchase Baby GatesSupervision – the most important safety resource and this comes totally free... Ensure that you have your baby in constant sight (it can take only a few seconds for an accident to happen). If you do have to leave your baby unsupervised for a few minutes, then purchasing a play pen ensures that your baby won’t be able to crawl anywhere dangerous while you’re not around.
Purchase Playpens IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT YOU NEVER LEAVE YOUR CHILD UNATTENDED FOR ANY DURATION OF TIME.

Baby Bath Time Safety The bathroom can be a very dangerous place for a baby, as a guide we have come up with some bath time safety tips and products to ensure your baby has a fun, safe bath time.
1. Supervision - NEVER leave your baby alone in the bath, ensure you have everything ready for the duration of the bath time so that you don't have reason to leave the room. Babies can drown in less than 60 seconds in water less than an inch high.
2. Cold before hot - Always ensure that you run the cold water first, this will reduce the risk of your baby becoming scolded.
3. Temperature - Ensure the water is warm, but not hot (around 38 degrees centigrade or 100 degrees fahrenheit). Traditionally parents like to test the water first by dipping their elbow into the bath, however everyone has a different heat resistance threshold, which means it may not feel as hot as it is. We would recommend using a thermometer in the bath, which can tell you an acurate reading of the bath's temperature. -
4. Water Height - Never allow the water to exceed your baby's waist height, and ensure when you are laying your baby down straight in the bath, that the water level reaches their shoulders at a maximum.
5. Taps - Do not allow your baby to touch or play with the taps, as this could lead to a serious injury or a scold. -
